Mangalore Institute of Oncology (M.I.O) and the Sanjeevini Cancer Seva Trust took a monumental step towards localising the fight against cancer with the inauguration of a Household Cancer Survey targeting one lakh homes across Southern Karnataka. This ceremony was held at M.I.O Hospital, Thirthahalli, on Saturday, October 18, 2025.

The initiative, titled “Cancer Information Collection Campaign – Survey of One Lakh Households” (ಕ್ಯಾನ್ಸರ್ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ಸಂಗ್ರಹ ಅಭಿಯಾನ “ಒಂದು ಲಕ್ಷ ಮನೆಗಳ ಸಮೀಕ್ಷೆ”), is designed to move beyond clinical statistics and directly understand the cancer awareness levels, fears, and deeply held misconceptions prevalent among the public. The findings will be crucial for developing targeted and effective cancer awareness programs and patient education strategies.

A Dignified Inauguration by Esteemed Guests

The inaugural function commenced at 11:30 AM with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by the distinguished guests, marking the start of this significant public health campaign.

The event was presided over by Dr. D. Suresh Rao, Director of M.I.O Hospitals and Sanjeevini Cancer Seva Trust. Dr. Rao highlighted the institution’s commitment not just to treatment, but to proactive cancer prevention through education and early detection.

The gathering was graced by prominent figures who appreciated the magnitude and foresight of the initiative:

Shri Araga Jnanendra, Former Home Minister, Government of Karnataka, and MLA, appreciated M.I.O’s commitment to extending specialised healthcare beyond urban centres.

The guests conveyed appreciation and best wishes for the success of this large-scale community outreach, and unveiled the official survey form. This moment symbolised the official launch of the campaign, which will now move from the hospital premises to the doorsteps of the community.

Driving Cancer Education, Dispelling Misinformation

This landmark 1-Lakh Household Survey is a vital tool to:

Assess Knowledge Gaps: Quantify how much the public, particularly in Southern Karnataka’s rural and semi-urban areas, truly knows about common cancer symptoms and risk factors.

Identify Fear and Misconceptions: Document the emotional barriers and misinformation that prevent people from seeking early diagnosis and timely treatment.

Create Targeted Campaigns: Use the data collected to design specific educational materials that address local fears and correct specific myths, ensuring the community receives clear and accurate cancer information.

M.I.O and Sanjeevini Cancer Seva Trust believe that knowledge is the best defence. By understanding the public’s current perception of cancer, we can empower them to take charge of their health and significantly improve early cancer detection rates in the region.
