Mangalore Institute of Oncology (M.I.O), in association with the Sanjeevini Cancer Seva Trust, inaugurated a new Mahiti Kendra (Cancer Information Centre) at Shikaripura on November 17th, 2025, further strengthening its mission to bring awareness of cancer and early-detection guidance to rural and semi-urban communities in Karnataka. This initiative marks another important step towards decentralizing cancer information services about cancerand improving access to expert advice in Malnad region.

The inauguration event was attended by several distinguished dignitaries who extended their support for this community-focused initiative. Among them were Dr. Suresh Rao, Director of M.I.O Hospitals and Sanjeevini Cancer Seva Trust; Mr. B. Y. Raghavendra, Hon. Member of Parliament from Shivamogga district; Dr. Divya Jyothi N, ENT Surgical Oncologist from M.I.O Thirthahalli; Mr. Girish Kumar N, Owner of Gokul Honda and Chairman of Shaurya YHAI Shikaripura; Mr. Nanjundi R, Taluk Planning Officer of Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala, Shikaripura; and Mrs. Sunanda Manjunath, Municipal Chairman of Shikaripura. Their presence underscored the growing importance of cancer awareness initiatives about awareness of cancer in rural areas.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Suresh Rao emphasized the critical role of information accessibility in improving cancer outcomes. He highlighted that communities often suffer due to lack of knowledge about symptoms, screening, and available treatment options. Establishing Mahiti Kendras in district and taluk centers aims to bridge this gap and provide reliable information that can guide individuals toward timely diagnosis and effective care.

Mr. B. Y. Raghavendra praised the initiative and noted that such efforts are essential in enhancing public health awareness, especially among economically and socially diverse populations. He assured continued support for health-focused development activities in the region.

Dr. Divya Jyothi N spoke on the increasing incidence of head and neck cancers in Karnataka and stressed the life-saving value of early detection. She highlighted how Mahiti Kendras can serve as first point of contact for individuals hesitant to approach hospitals or unaware of their symptoms’ seriousness of their symptoms.

The dignitaries collectively appreciated M.I.O’s vision of extending cancer-related support systems beyond major cities and into the rural belts where awareness levels are limited.

The Mahiti Kendra in Shikaripura will function as a free, walk-in information and guidance center, offering:

  • Awareness on symptoms of cancer, early warning signs, and preventive practices
  • Assistance in understanding government health schemes such as Ayushman Bharat – Vajpayee Arogya Shree
  • Directions and support for connecting patients to nearby cancer care centers including M.I.O Thirthahalli and M.I.O Mangaluru
  • Information on screening recommendations for high-risk individuals
  • Guidance on lifestyle factors linked to cancer prevention

The new center aims to empower citizens with knowledge, encourage early medical intervention, and reduce fear and stigma around cancer. It also strengthens M.I.O’s ongoing outreach programs across the region.

The establishment of the Mahiti Kendra at Shikaripura reflects M.I.O and Sanjeevini Cancer Seva Trust’s unwavering commitment to making quality health information accessible to all sections of society. Through such initiatives, they continue to enhance public health literacy and create pathways for timely, effective cancer care in rural Karnataka.
